What is obesity?

What is Obesity or Overweight?

For adults, a “body mass index” (BMI) of 30 and over in general is considered to be obese although BMI may not be an ideal tool to determine the risk. It is far more important to understand the distribution of the weight, body fat composition etc. to understand the risks associated with Obesity.

Understanding the risks

You could be in nomal BMI range and but can still have metabolic syndrome, pre-diabetes or even type 2 diabetes , and other diseases associated with weight such as cholesterol abnormalities. This is especially true if you have weight in the wrong areas such as the belly and upper part of the body.

BMI for Obesitycdc-obesity-stats

BMI is used because of the simplicity and for most people, it tends to correlate with their amount of body fat.

•An adult who has a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight.
•An adult who has a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.
See the following table for an example.

Body body percentage is more important!

It is important to remember that although BMI correlates with the amount of body fat, BMI does not directly measure body fat. As a result, some people, such as athletes, may have a BMI that identifies them as overweight even though they do not have excess body fat.

Waist to hip ratio

Other methods of estimating body fat and body fat distribution include measurements of body composition analysis, skinfold thickness and waist circumference, calculation of waist-to-hip circumference ratios, and techniques such as ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

The ideal waist to hip ratio for women should be 0.8 or lower and for men should be 1 or lower. That means, you should not have a big tummy or upper body weight for reducing the metabolic risks associated with weight.

  1. Try a non-surgical program for about 3-6 months first
  2. If you have identifiable medical causes for weight loss, work with a weight loss medical doctor to help reverse these
  3. If you have a sleep problem, try correcting these
  4. Also, consult with with a medical bariatrician, psychogolist or psychiatrist that can identify any eating disorders.
  5. If your BMI is under 40, you may need to try the medical weight loss program any way
  6. If you have elevated triglycerides, low good cholesterol, prediabetes, try the medical program under the careful monitorying of a bariatric or obesity medicine physician. If you cannot lose the weight after 3-6 months, and have a body mass index in the severe category, consider lap band, sleep or gastric bypass surgery.
  7. If you have contra-indications for gastric bypass such as cardiovascular disease, fatty liver, or other problems, you would have to do a medical program anyway.
  8. If you have never tried a medical program, given the lower risks and potential long term benefits, you should try a medical weight loss program, preferably one that works with you insurance such as W8MD, before you consider surgical options.

What is lab band surgery for weight loss?

Laparoscopic gastric banding is surgery to help with weight loss where a surgeon places a band around the upper part of your stomach to create a small pouch to hold food. The band limits the amount of food you can eat by making you feel full after eating small amounts of food.

What are the risk of Lap Band Surgery for weight loss?
Weight-loss surgery may increase your risk for gallstones, and can also cause other long term band related complications such as band erosions. While it might be appropriate for some, it is not a “quick fix” for obesity.

What are the risks associated with gastric banding surgery for weight loss:

  • Gastric band erodes through the stomach
  • Gastric band may slip partly out of place
  • Gastritis (inflamed stomach lining), heartburn, or stomach ulcers
  • Infection in the port, which may need antibiotics or surgery
  • Injury to your stomach, intestines, or other organs during surgery
  • Poor nutrition
  • Scarring inside your belly, which could lead to a blockage in your bowel
  • Your surgeon may not be able to reach the access port to tighten or loosen the band
  • Vomiting from eating more than your stomach pouch can hold

W8MD Medical Weight Loss Testimonials – New York City

New York City Weight Loss Testimonial – 1

My name is Harry, and a little history up front might explain my enthusiasm. I am 63 years of age and still working in a physical capacity as a maintenance mech/tech, and my joints are noticeably pain free and I’m feeling more agile. Another plus is my sleep partner has commented I’m snoring less.

I’m currently a W8MD Client for 12 weeks and have lost 27.5 pounds. In that time frame, I’ve managed to surpass my goal weight and am now embarking on losing an additional 20 pounds for purely selfish reasons. I’m feeling and looking good, and casual acquaintances are also commenting which is encouraging.

I feel with the continued guidance of Dr. Tumpati and assistant Laura, I fully expect to attain my goal. I have impending abdominal surgery to schedule which was my determining factor to lose the weight. I figure post-op rehab will be tolerable. I also recognize the opportunity presented to get myself back in shape and I’ll not waste it.

So what do you have to lose?…….. Besides the weight?……… Good Luck. Harry Q. 7/17/12 *

Weight Loss Testimonial New York City – 2

“I Came off all 5 medications with weight loss”   I am a 51 year old male with a little bit of a tummy and overweight by about 30 pounds. I was taking about 5 medications and all my doctors including my cardiologist at Temple University Hospital were after me to lose weight for the past few years. However, none of my doctors were able to specifically guide me in losing weight other than tell me to “lose weight”. Having tried many things on my own, I decided to seek help from Dr. Tumpati in the New York City Office.

Dr. Tumpati spent a lot of time explaining the metabolic risks associated with the belly fat and put me on a weight loss program with about 1000 calories a day. Having lost about 20 pounds and still going good, I went to see my cardiologist for follow up. I was pleasantly surprised to see my blood work that showed my cholesterol and other tests were in the ideal range and I was taken off of all 5 medications.

Personally, I never felt better. Having realized the benefits of losing the weight, I am still continuing the program as I like to lose another 10 pounds. Best of all, Dr. Tumpati accepts my insurance for the visits so that I do not have to pay out of pocket. His staff are very friendly and treat me like family. I recommend Dr. Tumpati without any reservations for anybody that not only wants to lose weight but also learn about healthy life style! – J.G.
