  • When you get on the scale, do you feel like you should weigh less?
  • Do you have excess belly fat or upper body weight?
  • Are you wondering what is causing you to gain weight?
  • Did you know up to 71% of the population are insulin resistant leading to weight gain, sugar cravings and overeating?

Alarming Statistics

According to the latest data, overall, 38 percent of U.S. adults are obese and 17 percent of teenagers are the same. Obesity is medically defined as having a body mass index (BMI), a measure of height to weight, that’s more than 30. If the BMI is between 25-29.9, it is considered overweight. Taken together, over 2/3 of the entire adult population of the United States are either overweight of obese.

NYC obesity statistis

New York’s adult obesity rate is currently 25.0 percent, up from 17.1 percent in 2000 and from 9.3 percent in 1990. According to the most recent data, adult obesity rates now exceed 35 percent in four states, 30 percent in 25 states and are above 20 percent in all states. Among the 5 boroughs of New York City, Bronx and Brooklyn lead the charts.

So, what is really causing the weight gain in NYC?

While there are many causes of weight gain, if you have weight in the middle or upper part of the body, you have the metabolic weight gain caused by insulin resistance!

What is insulin resistance?

Insulin resistance means that your body is not responding to a hormone that controls your blood sugar called insulin. As a compensation to insulin resistance, our body produces more insulin which in turn makes you gain weight.

Weight loss success stories New York City

FANTASTIC program! Truly a life changer! The first several months I lost on average 3 pounds a week. I have now lost 87 pounds in 10 months and I’m still losing! I can say it feels almost effortless, for with the elimination of most carbs plus the medication I have ZERO cravings and minimal hunger.

My cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar have all returned to normal having previously been considerably elevated. I look and feel twenty years younger (I am 57.) Staff is friendly and supportive, and the science works.

I did not think that I would be able to achieve such results, and certainly not in less than a year. I am amazed at my success, and I could not have done it without Dr. Tumpati and W8MD.

My appt with Dr Tumpati was great he asked me questions about the problems that I’ve been having and after I answered him we discussed it. He was very professional but very down to earth as well. I will definitely be seeing him in the future. And his secratery/nurse Laura has been excellent as well there was a problem getting a medication filled it had to be pre authorized and she made many phone calls to make sure that I was able to get the medication filled!!! So my overall experience at this office was excellent!!!!

It was my first visit and I was very impressed. He took a lot of time with me and was very thorough.

December 3, 2013 by a Verified Patient

Dr. Tumpati and staff were very courteous. The doctor took time to explain my condition, the methods to treat it, and his recommendation for treatment in my particular case. I was not rushed in and out in 5 minutes as with many other doctors. I would recommend Dr. Tumpati to others.

New weight loss drug Contrave available in New York City

In September, 2014, the FDA approved another weight loss medication – Contrave, a combination of the popular antidepressant and smoking cessation drug, Bupropion along with Naltrexone, a medication used in opioid addiction. This is the third new weight loss drug approved by the FDA in the last 3 years after approving Qsymia (Phentermine and Topiramate) and Belviq (Lorcaserin) for helping people lose weight.

Bupropion/naltrexone (Contrave) in sustained release formulation is approved for obesity defined as a body mass index of 30 or more.

Bupropion/naltrexone is a combination of two existing FDA approved drugs, bupropion and naltrexone both of which have individually shown some evidence of effectiveness in weight loss, and the combination is expected to have a synergistic effect just like the other combination medications such as Qsymia(Phentermine and Topiramate).

How effective is Contrave?

In the clinical trials, patients taking Contrave combined with diet and exercise lost more weight than patients taking a placebo and following the same diet and exercise program averaging about 5% of their body weight. This compares well with 3% body weight seen with Belviq although a bit less than the 9% seen in Qsymia.

Dosing of Contrave

The recommended daily dose of Contrave is two (8 mg naltrexone/90 mg bupropion) tablets taken twice daily (4 tablets total – 32 mg naltrexone, 360 mg bupropion).

Dose escalation of Contrave
Upon starting at a low dose of a quarter-dose (or one tablet) for one week and a pill will be added to the regimen each week until the full recommended dose is reached on Week 4.

Price of Contrave

Compared to the other new weight loss medications, Belviq and Qsymia, Contrave is a bit more affordable costing about 45-75 dollars per month depending on insurance coverage. With no insurance coverage, it only costs $75.00 per month. However, the more cost effective combination might still be the W8MD Phentermine and Topiramate at $45.00 biweekly.

Safety and Side Effects of Contrave

The most common adverse reactions reported with Contrave include nausea, constipation, headache, vomiting, dizziness, insomnia, dry mouth, and diarrhea.

According to Dr Prab R. Tumpati, MD – a leading weight loss physician and founder of W8MD Medical Weight Loss Centers of America, Contrave is a valuable tool in fighting obesity that affects over a third of the entire population of the United States with significant morbidity and mortality contributing to 50 other medical problems.

Benefits of losing weight in New York City

Things to consider for a healthy eating in New York City

Consider consuming nutrient-dense foods within and across the food groups, especially whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat or fat-free milk or milk products, and lean meats and other protein sources.

Limit the intake of saturated and trans fats, cholesterol, added sugars, sodium (salt), and alcohol.

Limit caloric intake to meet caloric needs.

All Americans should avoid unhealthy weight gain, and those whose weight is too high may also need to lose weight.

Why Are Nutrition and Weight Status Important?

Diet and body weight are related to health status. Good nutrition is important to the growth and development of children. A healthful diet also helps Americans reduce their risks for many health conditions, including:

  • Overweight and obesity
  • Malnutrition
  • Iron-deficiency anemia
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Dyslipidemia (poor lipid profiles)
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Osteoporosis
  • Oral disease
  • Constipation
  • Diverticular disease
  • Some cancers

Understanding Nutrition and Weight Status

Diet reflects the variety of foods and beverages consumed over time and in settings such as worksites, schools, restaurants, and the home. Interventions to support a healthier diet can help ensure that:

  • Individuals have the knowledge and skills to make healthier choices.
  • Healthier options are available and affordable.

Social Determinants of Diet

Demographic characteristics of those with a more healthful diet vary with the nutrient or food studied. However, most Americans need to improve some aspect of their diet.

Social factors thought to influence diet include:

  • Knowledge and attitudes
  • Skills
  • Social support
  • Societal and cultural norms
  • Food and agricultural policies
  • Food assistance programs
  • Economic price systems

Physical Determinants of Diet

Access to and availability of healthier foods can help people follow healthful diets. For example, better access to retail venues that sell healthier options may have a positive impact on a person’s diet; these venues may be less available in low-income or rural neighborhoods.

The places where people eat appear to influence their diet. For example, foods eaten away from home often have more calories and are of lower nutritional quality than foods prepared at home.

Because weight is influenced by energy (calories) consumed and expended, interventions to improve weight can support changes in diet or physical activity. They can help change individuals’ knowledge and skills, reduce exposure to foods low in nutritional value and high in calories, or increase opportunities for physical activity. Interventions can help prevent unhealthy weight gain or facilitate weight loss among obese people. They can be delivered in multiple settings, including health care settings, worksites, or schools.

Obesity is a problem throughout the population. However, among adults, the prevalence is highest for middle-aged people and for non-Hispanic black and Mexican American women. Among children and adolescents, the prevalence of obesity is highest among older and Mexican American children and non-Hispanic black girls. The association of income with obesity varies by age, gender, and race/ethnicity.
