What cosmetic Botox does
BOTOX Cosmetic contains onabotulinumtoxinA and temporarily reduces selected muscle activity. Its adult cosmetic labeling includes moderate-to-severe glabellar lines, crow’s-feet lines, forehead lines and platysma bands. It does not add facial volume and is not the same as a dermal filler.
Before treatment
Disclose every prior botulinum toxin product and date, neuromuscular conditions, swallowing or breathing problems, facial weakness, drooping eyelids, infection, pregnancy or breastfeeding, planned surgery, injectable antibiotics, muscle relaxants and blood-thinning medicines. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without its prescriber.
Possible effects and urgent warning signs
Bruising, pain, headache, eyelid or brow droop, asymmetry and an undesired expression can occur. The boxed warning describes possible distant spread of toxin effect. Seek urgent care for difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing, generalized weakness or serious allergic symptoms.
How long does it last?
Improvement is temporary, develops over time and varies by area and patient. The label notes that safety and effectiveness of BOTOX Cosmetic more frequently than every three months are not established.
