NYC Medical Weight-Loss FAQs
These frequently asked questions help New York City patients prepare for physician-supervised care at W8MD Brooklyn. Individual answers depend on medical evaluation, insurance, pharmacy access and treatment goals.

Appointments and eligibility
Is the first visit in person?
Yes. New patients begin with an in-person visit at 2632 East 21st Street, Suite L3, Brooklyn.
Will I receive a prescription at the first visit?
Not automatically. Prescribing depends on indication, contraindications, medication interactions, examination, available information and clinical judgment.
Who may qualify for medical weight-loss treatment?
Eligibility depends on BMI, weight-related conditions, previous treatment, medication-specific labeling and individualized risk-benefit assessment. BMI is a screening measure, not the only consideration.
Does W8MD serve patients outside Brooklyn?
Yes. Patients may travel from Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island, Long Island and nearby areas, but the active NYC office is in Brooklyn.
Medication questions
Does W8MD prescribe more than GLP-1 injections?
Yes. When appropriate, W8MD may compare semaglutide, tirzepatide, other indicated incretin treatment and traditional options such as phentermine, topiramate, Qsymia, Contrave, diethylpropion, phendimetrazine and orlistat.
Are Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound interchangeable?
No. Products differ in indication, dose, formulation and prescribing information. Never substitute or convert doses without the prescriber.
What are common GLP-1 side effects?
Nausea, constipation, diarrhea, reflux, fullness and abdominal discomfort can occur. Severe persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting with inability to hydrate or serious allergic symptoms require prompt medical attention.
Can W8MD prescribe phentermine?
Phentermine may be considered for selected patients after cardiovascular, blood-pressure, medication, pregnancy, mental-health and controlled-substance review.
What happens if weight loss plateaus?
W8MD reviews dose, adherence, hunger, nutrition, constipation, activity, sleep, interacting medicines and body composition before recommending a change.
Insurance and cost
Does insurance cover weight-loss visits?
Coverage varies by plan. Clinical-visit coverage is separate from pharmacy coverage.
Can W8MD help with prior authorization?
When appropriate, W8MD may submit supporting documentation, but cannot guarantee approval or change a plan exclusion.
What if my insurance denies a GLP-1?
Obtain the written reason, formulary and appeal criteria. W8MD can discuss an appeal, a preferred alternative, a traditional medication or self-pay and nonmedication strategies.
What do GLP-1 treatments cost?
See the current NYC cost page. Dose, product, pharmacy, visits, insurance and supplies affect total cost.
Nutrition, muscle and maintenance
Do I still need nutrition care with medication?
Yes. Nutrition supports tolerability, protein and micronutrient intake, bowel function, metabolic health, muscle preservation and maintenance.
Can weight loss cause muscle loss?
Some lean tissue can be lost. Individualized protein, resistance activity, appropriate pace and body-composition monitoring may help preserve strength and function.
Will weight return after stopping medication?
Weight recurrence can occur because obesity is chronic. W8MD plans early for continuing treatment, transition, nutrition, sleep, activity and prompt response to regain.
Sleep and MedSpa
Why does W8MD ask about sleep?
Snoring, sleep apnea, insufficient sleep and daytime sleepiness affect health and function. W8MD offers sleep evaluation and home sleep-study services when indicated.
Can I combine weight loss and MedSpa care?
Potentially. Medical and aesthetic goals are evaluated separately, and procedures may be staged around weight stability, health, downtime and realistic expectations.
