What this service addresses

Do not solve persistent problems by abandoning treatment. Contact the clinician or equipment supplier, especially when symptoms persist.

Clinical history

W8MD reviews sleep schedule, snoring or breathing reports, awakenings, daytime alertness, medicines, substances, medical conditions and prior sleep testing.

Testing decision

Testing is selected according to the suspected disorder and medical complexity. A home sleep apnea test is useful for some adults but is not a universal sleep test.

Personalized treatment

Care may include PAP therapy, behavioral sleep treatment, weight management, medication review, equipment support or referral, depending on the diagnosis.

How evaluation works

  1. Identify the main problem: breathing, insomnia, sleepiness, schedule, movements or another concern.
  2. Review risk and safety: driving risk, cardiometabolic conditions, medicines and prior results.
  3. Select appropriate testing: home testing, laboratory testing, records review or another evaluation.
  4. Create a treatment plan: target the diagnosed problem rather than treating symptoms blindly.
  5. Follow response: symptoms, device data, adherence, side effects and need for reassessment.

Important limitations and safety

Online information and screening questionnaires cannot establish a diagnosis. Call 911 for an emergency. If sleepiness makes driving unsafe, stop driving and arrange safe transportation.

Sleep, weight and metabolic health

Obstructive sleep apnea and obesity often overlap, but neither condition has only one cause. Weight management may be part of care for an eligible patient while PAP or another sleep treatment continues. W8MD can coordinate sleep evaluation with physician-supervised weight management.

Frequently asked questions

Does everyone need a sleep study?

No. The history determines whether testing is appropriate and which test can answer the clinical question.

Can a home study diagnose every sleep disorder?

No. Home sleep apnea testing is designed primarily for suspected obstructive sleep apnea in selected adults. It does not fully evaluate insomnia, narcolepsy, parasomnias, seizures or many movement disorders.

Can I stop CPAP after losing weight?

Not without reassessment. Symptoms can improve while clinically important OSA remains. Continue prescribed therapy until the treating clinician reviews the situation.
