What to Do if Insurance Stops Covering GLP-1
Steps to take when Wegovy or Zepbound coverage ends: verify the notice, appeal if appropriate, compare alternatives and protect weight-loss progress.

Contact the clinic before the last dose whenever possible. Coverage changes can involve a new formulary, prior-authorization renewal, employer exclusion, deductible reset or changed continuation criteria.
Your continuity checklist
- Read the notice and call the plan for the effective date and reason.
- Ask whether renewal, appeal, exception or an alternative covered medicine is available.
- Check remaining supply and the medication’s labeled missed-dose/restart instructions with the prescriber.
- Compare brand savings eligibility, cash options and traditional medicines.
- Strengthen the nutrition, resistance-training, sleep and self-monitoring plan.
Plan for maintenance, not panic
Withdrawal trials show that many participants regained weight after semaglutide or tirzepatide discontinuation, reinforcing obesity’s chronic nature. This does not mean everyone follows the same path or that abrupt substitution is safe.
Research: STEP 1 extension and SURMOUNT-4. See weight regain.
How W8MD can help
Physician assessment
Review medical conditions, medicines, prior treatment, sleep, nutrition, goals and contraindications before changing therapy.

Long-term follow-up
Track response, tolerability, body composition, plateaus and maintenance rather than treating the scale as the only outcome.
